Gershwin, George (1898-1937) American pianist and composer of many popular
songs; extended his range (especially in applying jazz idioms to concert works)
in Rhapsody in Blue (1924), piano concerto, Cuban Overture, An American in
Paris, opera Porgy and Bess, piano preludes. (The orchestration of Rhapsody in
Blue is by F. Grofe; of the other works, by Gershwin himself.) Studied with R.
Goldmark but was mainly self-taught. Died after an unsuccessful brain
operation.
